In conjunction with the HEARTLAND exhibition at SMART museum, Carnal Torpor and InCUBATE present the first of our DUALING workshops.

Dualing is a form of transdiciplinary improvisation in which 2 (or more) participants “duel” with each other via any type of expression they can muster: gesture, melody, dance, rhyme, recipe, reason, pop-culture reference, etc. Sometimes dualers will choose to assume a specific perspective or “character” during the dual, or they may changes perspectives very very fast. Duals usually follow a very minimal set of rules. The traditional rules being:

1. If you touch the other dualer(s) you loose

2. If you step out of your ring you loose

The dualers may either predetermine a theme or they may dual from “emptiness” and allow the dual to emerge without preconception. Dualing can be competitive or co-operative. It is traditional for a group of peers to serve as a panel of judges and provide feedback of some sort. This feedback can be as simple as a thumbs up or down declaration of victory, or as complex as a full transcription and exegesis on the dual itself.

The first of these free workshops will be held this thursday at InCUBATE, and we will explore some of the conceptual frameworks on which dualing is built, as well as spending time dualing with each other.
